Filling Out The FAFSA For Divorced Parents

If your parents are divorced, you will need to provide information about both of them when filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Here are some general guidelines to follow:

  1. Determine which parent you should report on the FAFSA. You will generally need to report the financial information of the parent with whom you lived the most during the past 12 months. If you did not live with either parent, or if you lived equally with both parents, you will need to report the financial information of the parent who provided the most financial support during the past 12 months.
  2. Gather the necessary financial information. You will need to provide detailed financial information for both of your parents, including income, assets, and expenses. You may need to provide tax returns, W-2 forms, and other financial documents to complete the FAFSA.
  3. Complete the FAFSA. When you get to the section on parent information, you will need to provide information about both of your parents, even if you are only reporting the financial information of one parent. You will need to provide basic personal and contact information for both parents, as well as information about their education and employment.
  4. Submit the FAFSA. Once you have completed and reviewed the application, you can submit it online through the FAFSA website. You will receive a confirmation email once your application has been successfully submitted.

If you have any questions or need assistance while filling out the FAFSA, you can contact the Federal Student Aid Information Center for help. It is important to complete the FAFSA as accurately and thoroughly as possible, as the information you provide will be used to determine your eligibility for federal student aid.
